What cagrilintide actually is
The name takes a little practice. This page explains what it means and why asking about approval matters.
Facts checked September 28, 2026.
A copy of a signal after food
Amylin is a hormone: a chemical message made by the body.
The pancreas, an organ near the stomach, releases amylin after a meal.
Amylin helps control hunger and slows how fast the stomach empties.
Cagrilintide is an altered copy made in a lab to last longer.
Knowing where the idea came from is useful. It does not tell us the whole story of the drug.
What “peptide” means
A peptide has a short chain of linked pieces, like beads along a thread.
The pieces that form peptides also make up proteins.
That word describes the chemical shape; it is not a stamp of approval or a promise of safety.
Ask: “Which medicine is it? What have studies shown? Is it approved?”
How it appears in studies
In REDEFINE 1, people received the study drug in a weekly shot under the skin.
That describes the trials. It is not a home-use plan.
Researchers have studied cagrilintide alone and in CagriSema, which adds semaglutide.
Semaglutide is a different medicine that copies a body message affecting hunger and blood sugar.
Untangle the combination nameA study drug is a different starting point
As of September 28, 2026, cagrilintide and CagriSema have no product approved by the FDA, the US drug regulator.
That agency has not judged cagrilintide safe and effective for treating any condition.
